The honest trade-off
There is no single perfect month, only a trade-off between three things: weather, crowds and school holidays. Summer offers the most reliable weather and the most open roads and facilities, but it is also the busiest and hottest time, especially in the desert parks.
The good news is that most families can shift the balance in their favour with just a week or two of flexibility, and the parks reward it handsomely.
Why the shoulder seasons win
Late spring and early autumn are a family's best friend. Temperatures are kinder for hiking with children, the crowds thin out noticeably once the main summer rush has passed, and campground availability opens up.
The trade-off is that some high-altitude roads, visitor centres and seasonal facilities open late or close early, so you gain calm and comfort but should check what's actually running at the parks you care about.
It depends on the park
Season means very different things across the country. The desert parks of the Southwest are at their most pleasant in spring and autumn and brutally hot at midday in summer, while the high Rockies parks are essentially a summer-only proposition because snow closes the roads for much of the year.
Coastal California stays mild almost year-round, and the southern parks and Florida flip the pattern entirely, with winter being the comfortable season. Plan the timing around the specific parks on your route rather than a single national rule.
Beating the daily crowds
Whenever you go, the time of day matters as much as the time of year. Popular trailheads, car parks and shuttle queues are quietest in the first couple of hours after opening and again in the late afternoon.
Travelling by RV is a real advantage here: staying in or near the park lets you be at the marquee sights early, then retreat to camp for a slow lunch while the day-trippers arrive.
Reservations and closures change
An increasing number of parks run timed-entry or vehicle-reservation systems during peak months, and both the rules and the road-opening dates shift from year to year.
